This article explores the ideal components of a self management support programme

It summarises research evidence relating to self management and sets out the key components of an ideal programme as including: giving information; using motivational interviewing to understand the patient's information needs; checking the patient has understood the information; collaboratively deciding how to manage their condition; using action planning tools to help patients plan how they will change their health-related behaviours.
