In this blog, Julie Fenner explores what the new definition of 'health literacy' developed by the World Health Organisation means in practice.  

The blog highlights the definition's emphasis on moving away from seeing health literacy as a deficit in the individual to a deficit in 'the system', and the role that voluntary and community sector organisations can play in supporting health services to address health literacy issues and in supporting local people to access services and better manage their own health.
