This article reviews what is known about compliance and concordance and explores patient and practitioner behaviour.

It argues that a more open discussion about medication not only leads to more satisfying consultations for both doctors and patients, but leads to more focused prescribing which patients are more likely to adhere to and that it may also result in fewer prescriptions being issued. It looks at current patient and practitioner behaviour and explores potentially useful consultation models.
