The standard sets out a quality statement, how it should be measured and its implications for service providers, health professionals, commissioners and people using services.

The standard states that 'Patients are actively involved in shared decision making and supported by healthcare professionals to make fully informed choices about investigations, treatment and care that reflect what is important to them.'

It briefly sets out measures relating to structures, processes and outcomes that demonstrate that the standard is being implemented.

There are also related standards for:

  • Giving patients opportunities to discuss their health beliefs, concerns and preferences;
  • Understanding treatment options;
  • Supporting patient choice.
