This report provides an overview of the research evidence for self management interventions and strategies used in cancer care, and identifies gaps in the researchwith specific recommendations for   areas where further work needs to be undertaken

The report focuses specifically on supported self management, which is the interaction between health professionals and people with cancer to help peopleto manage problems associated with cancer and its treatment for themselves. 

The recommendations from this evidence review are that the following areas be researched to enhance self management in cancer care:

  • Survivorship care plans
  • Topic specific programme
  • Programmes for socially disadvantaged groups
  • Support materials
  • Key worker role
  • Health professional training
  • Ways of evaluating efficacy of self management interventions
