Testing and refining the ‘Ask 3 Questions’ campaign promoting shared decision making to patients in Newcastle

This case study describes work by the Newcastle team working on the Health Foundation's MAGIC programme to refine the 'Ask3 Questions' campaign to promote shared decision making and survey patients on their experience.

Work focused on two areas:

  • refining the wording of the three questions and design of the patient activation leaflet to reflect feedback from the local Patient and Public Involvement Panel and local clinicians
  • developing a brief survey that would capture patient experience of shared decision making, that was refined from 5 questions to a single question to make it more usable.

The process has led to good clinical ownership of the outcomes of the process and the development of an approach that is sustainable.
