This presentation sets out findings of an on-line survey of over 500 people with long term conditions.  The survey showed that most patients want to be helped to help themselves, and reported that self management courses significantly reduce their visits to A&E, as well as to GP surgeries.

Getting the right advice to support them to manage their condition was identified by 62% of people as one of the three improvements to their care which would make a difference to their quality of life.  Despite 60% agreeing or strongly agreeing that attending a self management course had made a difference to their life, nearly half had not been referred to such a course until more than five years after they were first diagnosed.
