Case studies
The Health Foundation's annual SHINE programme supports health services to find new approaches to delivering healthcare. In 2012 the programme sponsored a wide range of projects designed to support patients to be active partners in their own care. This booklet collates information posters produced at the end of the programme summarising the challenge, intervention, learning and results.

healthtalk.org provides free, reliable information about health issues, by sharing people's real-life experiences. It includes a range of information about shared decision-making, including what it is and why people might want or not want to be involved in decisions about their care. For each topic within shared decision making it includes a series of brief videos of patients talking about their experiences of that topic.

The teams in Cardiff and Newcastle working on the Health Foundation’s MAGIC programme developed a series of tools to help them understand the progress they had made in implementing shared decision making, the challenges and some of the approaches to overcoming these.

This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials and observational studies found that overall, SDM interventions increased knowledge, informed choice, participation in decision-making, decision self-efficacy, preference for collaborative decision making and reduced decisional conflict among disadvantaged patients.

This article describes how Health Dialog Services Corporation (a part of BUPA) developed a telephone-based care management programme that enables patients to participate in their treatment decisions with the support of telephone–based health coaches who help at-risk individuals learn to participate in decisions with their doctors, improve self-management skills, and more effectively navigate the health system.

This research from America reports that fewer than 50% of severely or terminally ill patients have an advance directive in their medical record, and physicians are accurate only about 65% of the time when predicting patient preferences for intensive care.

This article highlights that whilst large scale implementation programmes in the UK have delivered valuable lessons on how best to embed shared decision making, adoption of shared decision making into routine clinical settings has been slow.
