This review is an update to previous reviews. It found evidence that, compared to usual care,use of decision aids improves people's knowledge regarding options; stimulates people to take a more active role in decision making; improves accurate risk perceptions when probabilities are included; and improves congruence between the chosen option and the patient's values.
Case studies
This case study briefly describes how the team in Newcastle working on the Health Foundation’s MAGIC programme to implement shared decision making worked with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) to spread shared decision making across the wider health and social care sector.

This is a collection of articles focusing on how materials to support patient decisions can be designed, implemented and evaluated. The articles explore a wide range of issues including how to address health literacy in patient decision aids, how to present information about options and how to communicate risk.
